⭐ 11. CHOCU Learning Centers (Digital Access & Literacy)

Our Purpose: Bring essential technology, learning tools, and safe academic spaces to underserved rural communities preparing youth for a digital future and improving school success.

EXPANSION: Activities

▪Set up small CHOCU learning hubs with solar power (where needed), Wi-Fi, and 3–10 laptops or desktops

▪Provide basic computer time to students after school or on weekends

▪Include educational software: typing games, offline Wikipedia, math tutorials, English programs

▪Set fair, supervised use policies: e.g., 30 minutes per learner, signup logs

▪Encourage youth to use tech for school research, typing, and practice

👉 This is life-changing in rural Uganda most children have never touched a computer, yet they’re expected to sit national exams typed in English.
Host afternoon and weekend sessions focusing on:

▪Spoken English (common phrases, confidence building)

▪Reading aloud and comprehension

▪Vocabulary expansion

▪Creative writing and poetry

▪Debate and storytelling clubs

▪Use age-appropriate books, story cards, and teacher volunteers

▪Align sessions with Uganda Primary curriculum and national exams

👉 These sessions boost confidence, exam readiness, and life skills especially among shy, rural, or second-language learners.

➡️ English fluency opens doors to BYU-Pathway, jobs, leadership roles, and global communication.
Offer beginner lessons in:

▪Basic computer parts and use

▪Typing skills

▪Internet browsing

▪Safe online behavior

▪Email setup and etiquette

▪Using tools like Google Docs, PowerPoint, and educational platforms

▪Create progression levels: Bronze (beginner), Silver (intermediate), Gold (project-based)

▪Celebrate milestones with certificates or showcase events

👉 This builds skills that directly lead to employability, online learning, and university success.

▪Guide students who are taking online classes (e.g. BYU-PW, secondary e-learning, national revision)

▪Provide quiet, connected space for coursework

Help with:

▪submitting assignments

▪writing emails

Assign volunteer “Digital Coaches” to help 1-on-1

👉 Without support, most rural students drop out of online programs early.

With CHOCU, they succeed and return to uplift their families.
▪Create quiet rooms or covered shelters for students to study in evenings or weekends

▪Include desks, lamps (solar if needed), fans, and chalkboards

▪Allow group discussions, test prep, and mentorship

▪Hold exam readiness sessions before UNEB PLE or UCE exams

👉 Many rural students have nowhere to study at home due to noise, darkness, or overcrowding.

CHOCU becomes their second home for learning.
